Automobile accidents/collisions commonly result in neck pain, headache and mid-low back pain and stiffness complaints. Fortunately, with appropriate and early treatment, most injuries will completely resolve. In fact, we try to reassure our patients that outcomes are generally favorable, versus trying to scare them into long-term treatment plans.
With patients with neck pain (with or without headache) in addition to some mobility deficits, we begin with patient education to remain active, mobilization/manipulation procedures to patient tolerance, range of motion and/or stretching exercises. Dry needling and/or ultrasound may also be indicated.
Our treatment goals are to avoid chronic pain following a whiplash associated disorder from an automobile accident. The earlier the proper treatment can be initiated, the better the prognosis.
